POSTDIGITALISM Conference cycle
Take part in the “Tuesday lessons” Postigitalism Conference Cycle organized by the National Architecture School of Paris Marne La Vallée in partnership with Design By Data of École des Ponts ParisTech. Attending experts will introduce you to the new architectural & societal challenges in today’s digital age.

Talk “BIM and COMPUTATIONAL DESIGN Edition n°2”
The event took place on the 12th of April, 2017 at Volumes coworking, (78 rue Compans 75019 PARIS).
The event was coordinated and hosted by Nicolas Sénemaud (X-TU Architects), architect and graduate from the BIM Mastère Spécialisé® Executive Master who achieved a professional thesis about computational design.
How do the diverse design professions approach the evolutions brought by digital technologies? What are the tools currently used to make iterations between the conceptual and the technical evolutions possible? Regarding this specific and current background, the school has decided to create two new Mastères Spécialisés® - Executive Masters program: BIM and DESIGN by DATA, in order to answer the resulting new professional training needs. These two programs have been designed in a tailored and innovative way (Part-Time format, e-learning, transdisciplinary approach).

Creative Fluency - A lecture by Hugh Dutton - DESIGN BY DATA OFF PROGRAM - Dec 9 2016

ABOUT HUGH DUTTON
Hugh Dutton is the founder of HDA | Hugh Dutton Associés, a Paris-based studio with a branch office in Hong Kong. Hugh Dutton qualified as an architect at the Architectural Association in London and spent early years working with Norman Foster on the Stansted Airport. In 1982 Hugh joined Peter Rice, an engineer known for his inventivity, notably for the Sydney Opera house and Pompidou Center, at his newly formed company RFR in Paris. He then spent the next 13 years immersed in an integrated holistic approach to design. Collaboration from this time include pioneering bolted structural glass and cable structures at the La Villette Science museum, the Louvre pyramids, La Defense fabric ‘Clouds’, the marble translucent west front of the Cathedral de Notre Dame de la Treille in Lille. The publication “Structural Glass”, jointly written by Dutton and Rice, is regarded as a seminal work by the profession.

Open Talk BIM / COMPUTATIONAL DESIGN - march 14 2016
This conference was organized to offer a debate about digital innovation for architecture and construction. This open talk was also intended as an opportunity to share views on BIM, Computational Design, parametric design, collaboration, digital manufacturing, robotics, datas and their impact on Architecture and Construction Professions.

In this video, Hugh Dutton of HDA | Hugh Dutton Associés explains how he merges design, architecture and engineering into its practice. He also give an insight into how difficult is today to find the right collaborators that have these integrated skills. That’s why HDA partnered up with DESIGN by DATA in order to help creating this new profile called “computational designer“.
DESIGN by DATA Rese Arch MEETUP Paris
Rese arch MEETUP is an annual international conference and networking event bringing together practitioners and theorists of computational design in architecture, experts in digital manufacturing and related contemporary thinkers and philosophers.
Ján Pernecký of rese arch - an independent platform supporting research, education and critical thinking in architecture in Europe and worldwide - in collaboration with Francesco Cingolani of Volumes Coworking organized the second installment of the rese arch MEETUP, which took place in Paris at VOLUMES coworking on 28 May 2016.
The event took the form of a mid-size informal gathering of peer designers and researchers in the field of computational design in architecture. Each of the speakers held a 30 minutes long lecture followed by 10 minutes Q&A session. The purpose was to update the peers of each-other’s personal projects, agendas and research. It was also a great opportunity to eventually meet in person and arrange future collaborations in a professional, yet friendly and relaxed environment.
DESIGN by DATA was the topic of the spring 2016 edition of the rese arch MEETUP Paris hosted by Volumes: lectures elaborating on the idea of a design ruled by input parameters, big data, statistics, numerical simulations and its impact on the essence of architecture as a cultural discipline.
Replay Conference n°4 @ La Gaîté Lyrique with special guest Yasmine Abbas
Yasmine discussed contemporary mobilities, our immersion in fluid spaces, world inhabited by strange creatures, hybrids, humans, and non-humans and the neo-nomads that we have become. Needs of memorable experience and anchoring in a world that is always in flux calls for particular architecture and architectural processes that take into account mobile sensory parameters.
Yasmine Abbas is a hybrid, neo-nomad and architect exploring mobilities, physical, mental and digital, art and design processes. Graduated with a master of science from MIT and a Doctor of Design from Harvard Graduate School of Design, she is today Chair of Design Management at Paris College of Art and consultant in urban strategic design. She is also coordinator of the "Art and Culture in the Digital Turn" area within the DESIGN by DATA program.

The stakes of large scale 3D printing
If 3D printing - or additive manufacturing - represents a set of mature technologies in many industries now it still remains new and it keeps growing. For it, maturity does not mean stopping its growth, and even less the beginning of the decline. Whether in medicine or aviation it seems that everything remains to be done even if we already know a lot about it... but what about the additive manufacturing on a large scale? What are its challenges, its specificities, its scientific or technological obstacles? Besides from what size an approach can she be defined as a 'large-scale' one. Philippe Morel, tried during this talk, to review what's already existing in that field, but also, and especially, to technically and conceptually consider the future of large scale additive manufacturing.

About Philippe Morel :
Philippe Morel is an architect and theorist, cofounder of EZCT Architecture & Design Research (2000) and more recently (2015) of the Large-scale 3D printing corporation XtreeE (where he serves as Chairman). He is currently an Associate Professor at the ENSA Paris-Malaquais where he directs the Master program within the Digital Knowledge department (http://dk-digital-knowledge.com/ ; cofounded with Pr. Christian Girard), as well as the Head of the scientific and pedagogical committee of the DESIGN by DATA program at the Ecole des Ponts ParisTech. He was until last year both an invited Research Cluster and MArch Diploma Unit Master at UCL Bartlett. Prior to the Bartlett he has taught at the Berlage Institute (Seminar and Studio) and at the AA (HTS Seminar and AADRL Studio). His long lasting interest in the elaboration of a Theory of Computational Architecture is well expressed by some of his first published essays (including The Integral Capitalism, 2000-2002; Research On the Biocapitalist Landscape, 2002; Notes on Algorithmic Design, 2003; Notes on Computational Architecture, 2004; A Few Precisions on Architecture and Mathematics, Mathematica Day, Henri Poincare Institute, Paris, January 2004; or Forms of Formal Languages: Introduction to Algorithmics and Bezier Geometry with Mathematica, 2005). Philippe Morel lectured in various places (including MIT Department of Architecture, A Few Remarks on Epistemology and Computational Architecture, Lecture, March 2006; Architectural Association, Information Takes Command, 2007; The Laws of Thought, 2008; Pangaea Proxima, 2008; or recently What is computationalism?, 2012). In February 2007, he curated the exhibition Architecture beyond Forms: The Computational Turn of Architecture at the Maison de l’architecture et de la ville PACA in Marseille. Explicitly departing from Eisenman’s dissertation The Formal Basis of Modern Architecture (1963) the exhibition addressed both historically and theoretically the linguistic and computational turns in architectural design. Philippe Morel book Empiricism & Objectivity: Architectural Investigations with Mathematica (2003-2004), subtitled A Coded Theory for Computational Architecture, exhibited at ScriptedByPurpose (Philadelphia, Sept. 2007), is to be considered the first architectural theory book entirely written in code. EZCT work, present in the FRAC Centre and Centre Pompidou permanent collections, as well as in private collections, has been presented recently in the exhibition Out of Hand: Materializing the Postdigital at the Museum of Arts and Design in NY.

Replay Conference n°2 @ La Gaîté Lyrique with special guest Eric Vernhes
Eric Vernhes, as a multidisciplinary artist creates kinetic visual or sound installations and systems, whose behaviour are programmed on the basis of self-generative logicals, whether interactive or hybrids.
Architect from the Paul Virilio studio, then scriptwriter, filmaker and musician, Eric Vernhes uses digital process and the extract from their technical context at the service of a timeless speech inspired by literature and philosophy.
During this event, Eric Vernhes achieved the “dissection” of one of his work, “Gerridae” which is a predictive and interactive text generator.
By showing how the creative process of a piece of art is graduated, twisted or inspired by software tools it is made from, this talk asked what do opposite or bind technology, humans and nature.
Participants of the Design by Data Mastère Spécialisé® Executive Master will have the opportunity to work with Eric Vernhes in the program as he is in charge of the “Art, Technology and the Creative Process” course.
