First year

This faculty department is in charge of the first year of the engineering program for students entering after the Grandes École preparatory classes or after a first university degree.

The first year is primarily a year of transition, between basic scientific education and new disciplinary fields, but also to new ways of working, with international mobility an integral part of the program. Year 1 has its own specific objectives:

•    To consolidate scientific foundations in the School’s key disciplines, principally mathematics, computer science, mechanics. This broad and robust scientific culture constitutes a long-term investment. It is one of the characteristics of students who have been through École des Ponts ParisTech, who are skilled in modelling reality by handling concepts that that maximise the potential of modelling.
•    To discover new disciplines, in particular economics and social sciences. During the first year, engineering students develop the understanding of the world and of human relations that they need in order to manage teams and take decisions, in particular through teamwork on projects.

The first year, punctuated with numerous presentations, professional encounters, and introductory projects, gradually guides students towards the choice of one of the Masters program departments. The aim is to make the transition from a culture based on the acquisition of knowledge to a culture focused on finding sustainable solutions to societal needs.

During their first year on the engineering program, École des Ponts ParisTech students will learn to develop a vision that is simultaneously scientific, technical, economic, human, innovative, multicultural, and sustainable. The development of very high-level skills to resolve complex new problems that cut across disciplines is one of the essential objectives of École des Ponts ParisTech, and the first year constitutes a launchpad for the graduates of tomorrow.
