Annales des ponts et chaussées
In 1831, the dissemination of engineering knowledge resulted in the creation of the regular publication “Annales des ponts et chaussées, Mémoires et documents relatifs à l’art des constructions et au service de l’ingénieur” (Annals of the ponts et chaussées, essays and documents on the art of constructions and for the use of engineers).
In 2010, École nationale des ponts et chaussées, an associate civil engineering arm of the National Library of France, provide access to the full text of the Annales des ponts et chaussées (period 1831-1931), via the Gallica Digital library.
At the instigation of the Director-General of Ponts et Chaussées, Berard, and under the authority of the Director of the École des Ponts et Chaussées, Gaspard Riche de Prony, a Commission was created in 1831 to explore the possibility of a regular publication. The Commission met 5 times and, on May 1, 1831, the first issue of the Annales des ponts et chaussées was published with the translation of an article by Henry Booth, on the Liverpool to Manchester Railway ».
An article by Jean Michel retraces the origins and history of the Annales des ponts et chaussées and its connections with the organisation of the School and the spread of knowledge.
