Applied Mathematics and Computer Science

When entering their 2nd year, engineering students can choose one of the courses offered by the Applied mathematics and computer science (IMI) department, to acquire mastery of modeling, calculation, optimization and design tools.

4 options in 2nd year

Opportunities in 3rd year

Aprt from the PMA program, all applications should be submitted on lInstitut Polytechnique de Paris platform.

FCI and IPEF

The "Formation Complémentaire Intégrée" (FCI) is reserved for "X" and "normaliens" students. This 18-month course enables students to join École nationale des ponts et chaussées in 3rd year, in order to obtain a double engineering degree (from the School) and a Master's degree.

IPEF students can follow the FCI format within the IMI department.

From the second year onwards, on entry to the master's cycle or integrated complementary training, engineering training is followed within a teaching department.

Program structure

The courses offered by the Applied mathematics and Computer science department include compulsory courses, open weeks and elective courses.

Compulsory courses fall into 3 categories

  • Core courses (e.g. introduction to law, management, languages, etc.) designed to give you the essential foundations for today's engineers.
  • Applied mathematics and Computer science courses: the main focus is on mathematical tools and their applications, and the difference between you and engineers from other courses or other schools will come from this ability to innovate through knowledge of mathematical tools that are reputed to be difficult (but not for our students!)
  • Courses depending on the chosen option, which enable you to familiarize yourself with the chosen field of application and give you the characteristics of the exit profile and therefore of the first position occupied.

A la carte courses are possible if they are part of a third-year project approved by the School.

Opening weeks are organized with experts, professionals and researchers in the fields of finance, Big Data, logistics and modeling. Travel and company visits are also organized. A cycle of conferences, featuring technical achievements by France's most innovative companies, enables students to gauge the impact of these techniques on the industrial and banking landscape.

A choice of elective courses, offered by the Applied mathematics and Computer science department or by other departments, enables students to combine knowledge of an application sector with mastery of cross-disciplinary tools

Recruitment according to chosen option

  • The banking sector (quantitative analysis, structuring, trading, risk analysis)
  • R&D in industry
  • High-tech programs in industry
  • Industrial design offices
  • Scientific computation service providers
  • Engineering and organizational sectors dealing with optimization problems
  • Public research and higher education
  • AI professions (Data scientist, Data engineer...)
