Applied Economics program

M2 Public policies and development (PPD)

Jointly accredited by EHESS, ENS and École nationale des ponts et chaussées, approved by the Paris School of Economics and supported by the Development Research Institute (IRD), the French Development Agency (AFD), the  Centre for Economic Research and its Applications (CEPREMAP) and the Jameel-Poverty Action Lab (J-PAL Europe), the PPD Masters programme trains specialists in the design, analysis and assessment of public action, in both developed and developing countries.

Objectives

This programme develops skills in the assessment of public action in developed or developing countries, drawing on the resources of the Jourdan campus research labs (Paris-Jourdan Economics Research Unit and INRA’s Applied Economics Lab).

Benefits

The programme provides a balanced mix of academic courses introducing the methodological and conceptual frameworks, primarily at M1 level, and specialist and applied courses at M2 level.
Special emphasis is placed on the acquisition of modern techniques of assessing public policy (microeconomic tools, quantitative methods,…).However, all the disciplines that contribute to providing an understanding and perspective on these will be tackled, history, political science, sociology, drawing on the skills of Government experts.
Most of the teaching staff are affiliated to CEPREMAP, to French government agencies or international organisations, and therefore play an active role in the design and evaluation of public policies.

Students at ENPC can join the PPD programme at the second year Masters stage for their third year in the School.

The second year Masters is based on accreditation for 11 course modules (largely delivered in English) and the writing of a research dissertation, for a total of at least 60 ECTS credits:

  • three courses are compulsory and form the foundation subjects (Evaluating public policies, Empirical methods for policy evaluation and Public economics:tax and transfer policies).
  • advanced optional courses totalling at least 27 ECTS credits must be chosen from two specialist options (social policies and global policies).
  • the research dissertation counts for 40% of the final grade for the second year Masters.
