Executive Master in Energy Renovation of Old Buildings

Background

Old buildings are an essential part of our cultural heritage, reflecting our techniques and our territories. Preserving and passing them on to future generations now requires a radically new approach, one that is equal to the climatic, environmental, and societal challenges facing our societies.

In a context of accelerating climate change, resource scarcity, and systemic instability, the rehabilitation of old buildings can no longer be limited to a strictly architectural or heritage-based approach. It must fully integrate the imperatives of sustainability, decarbonization, sobriety, and resilience in order to guarantee the heritage's ability to stand the test of time.

École nationale des ponts et chaussées and the Cité de l'architecture et du patrimoine, through École de Chaillot, are launching a new program on the energy rehabilitation of buildings constructed before 1948, comprising 11 modules intended for architects, technical design offices (BET), construction companies, and project owners, with a multidisciplinary approach that is technical, heritage-focused, and operational. The courses will use participatory educational engineering: collaborative work, frescoes, flipped learning, articles, etc.

More information and how to apply

This Mastère Spécialisé® - Executive Master is taught in French.

Objectives

  • Understand the specific characteristics of old buildings (techniques, materials, performance, pathologies).
  • Design and implement energy renovation solutions that are compatible with the preservation of buildings that are listed, classified as historic monuments, or unprotected but of heritage interest.
  • Integrate the regulatory, economic, social, and environmental challenges of the energy transition and its adaptation to old buildings of heritage value.

The objective: to strengthen the capacity of participants—architects, engineers, project managers, contractors, operations managers—to operate in the demanding market of energy and ecological rehabilitation of heritage buildings. This field of activity requires strong technical, economic, legal, and insurance skills, as well as professionalism, discernment, and a sense of collective responsibility.

Careers

Given the significant need for energy renovation and the expertise required to achieve this ambition, the various trades involved will be able to develop their skills or organize their transition to this promising sector.

The program is intended for architects, technical design offices (BET), construction companies, private or public project owners, local authorities, and ministries.
