COHORT 2021-2022
Elie Salameh
Module « Interoperability and Computational Workflows »
Elie Salameh joined the Executive Master DBD in the search for new and innovative design tools and workflows that improve how the built environment could be designed. I felt that in a large number of architecture studios, the technologies that we have at our disposal were not being exploited to their full potential. Although we work on computers on a daily basis, we still use them as virtual drawing boards and not as the powerful assistants that they have the potential to be.
With a multitude of modules covering an extensive range of topics related to computational design and building technologies, the Master's program provided me with precisely this type of know-how. One of the modules, "Interoperability and Computational Workflows," was particularly interesting to me.
Led by Bonny Nichol, the course covered a great variety of tools that integrate seamlessly to form very powerful computational workflows - synergetic workflows that harness the power of both BIM and computational design and can potentially revolutionize how we design the built environment.
The projects explored included environmental simulation, parametric design, and optimization tools integrated within BIM interfaces and connected to real-time and VR visualization tools in one continuous workflow.
The importance of this module is that it shifted the paradigm from "BIM or computational design" to "BIM and computational design" - a shift with results that proved to be fascinating and highly relevant to the building industry’s problems.
Although the course was mainly introductory, the topics and tools discussed were later elaborated in separate modules of the program.

Testimony Léa Khairallah
Lea Khairallah, urbanist and architect at Richez Associés Paris, is a graduate of the DBD Specialized Master, class of 2020.
« Computational design and, more generally, the use of artificial intelligence have become essential aspects in the designer's daily life, particularly in architecture and urbanism. Bringing together different fields such as physics, mathematics, design and art, they provide designers with methods and tools that allow them to go beyond traditional approaches and generate an innovative vision of the various issues encountered during their projects.
The DBD Master's offers, through a transversal and multidisciplinary approach, a 360 vision allowing an understanding of the computational design’s world. Presenting various subjects and innovative projects, it equipped me with a series of modern tools and methods. Above all, it helped me develop a new approach to problem solving I apply in my daily professional life.
Beyond the courses and the theoretical contributions, the professional and academic partnerships of the Master offer various horizons allowing to specialize, through internships and the research thesis, in different fields. This is how, today, I contribute to various projects including aspects of artificial intelligence, environmental studies and performance driven design.
Finally, the Master was an overall positive experience filled with memorable exchanges with brilliant, and curious collaborators in various fields that are just as interesting and fundamental to the world of computational design.»
